Replace or Repair your Roof

When should I consider a repair instead of replacing?

Do I need a repair?

North Texas has hailstorms every year and these storms normally bring high winds too. If you haven’t repaired your roof in the last few years or since the last bad storm, you probably need a repair or maybe even a replacement. Roofs should be inspected twice a year by the homeowner, every few years by a professional roofer, and always by a professional roofer after a bad storm.

Once a roof is damaged, it gets worse fast. Why should you replace a damaged roof if it’s not leaking? Once a roof is damaged from wind or hail, the shingles don’t stick down as well (due to adhesive strip damage) and the roof becomes more susceptible to further damage. A roof can look perfectly normal from the curb, but if it has hail or wind damage it is only a matter of time before it starts leaking, if it hasn’t already.

If damage is done in a non-uniform way (tree falling on roof, localized decking rot) you can probably get away with just a repair to that area. Uniform damage from wind or hail typically can only be remedied with a full replacement due to degradation of shingles across all slopes.
